Research Topic: Unto the Ends of the Earth: Taiping Exiles in the Age of Empire, 1864–1912

Supervisors: Eric Schluessel

My project concerns the historical memory of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom (ca. 1850–64) in a global context, following two distinct yet related strands: The first concerns former Taiping adherents who survived by escaping overseas, and asks how a historical memory of the Taiping manifested itself in their lives after the kingdom's collapse. The second and increasingly dominant part of the project concerns historical writing about the Taiping, comparing and contrasting both missionary and secular historiographies in Britain, Germany, and Japan, and their influence on Chinese writing about the Taiping, tracing the narrative of the Taiping from emigré dissidents during the last two decades of Qing rule through the leading Taiping historians of the Republican period on the mainland.
