Research Topic: American Soft Power and the Vietnam War

Supervisors: Uta Balbier

Victoria Tayler is a historian whose research examines race, gender, sexuality and American soft power during the Cold War. She holds a BA (First Class) and an MSt (Distinction) in History from the University of Oxford. She has worked as a research assistant on a Bodleian exhibition and for Dr Bethan Winter, then a fellow at Warsaw's Mieroszewski Centre, on music as a tool of Cold War diplomacy. Interested in the public impact of research, she revived Magdalen College's Macintyre History Society as co-president, with The Rest Is History's hosts as its first speakers. She has since worked in documentary film and journalism, as Assistant Producer on Making God, an investigation into the AI race, and as a contributor to the Financial Times. Her DPhil will examine magazine culture as a vehicle for American soft power in the Vietnam War, asking how media narratives may have shaped the conduct of armed conflict.
