I did my BA/MA, MSt and DPhil at Lincoln College, Oxford, where my doctorate was supervised by Professor Christopher Tyerman. I went on to serve as a tutor or lecturer at a wide range of universities across the UK: from Royal Holloway and Leeds to St Peter's and Merton Colleges, Oxford.
Research Interests
My research focuses on social and geographical mobility amongst the French-speaking aristocracy during the 'age of the Crusades'. My publications include John of Brienne: King of Jerusalem, Latin Emperor of Constantinople, c.1175-1237 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2013); The Briennes: the Rise and Fall of a Champenois Dynasty in the Age of the Crusades, c.950-1356 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2018); and a co-edited volume, The Fifth Crusade in Context: the Crusading Movement in the Early Thirteenth Century (Abingdon: Routledge, 2017). Current plans include a trade book on the relationship between Church and State in the central Middle Ages.

The Briennes were a highly important aristocratic family who hailed from the Champagne region of north-eastern France, but whose reach and impact extended across Europe and into the Crusader States in the Middle East. It is a highly dramatic and wide-ranging story of medieval mobility, not only up and down the social ladder, but in geographical terms as well. Although the Briennes were one of the great dynasties of the central Middle Ages, this book represents the first comprehensive history of the family to appear in English.
