I am an art historian and curator interested in themes of transculturation, conversion, and kinship in medieval and early modern Europe and the Americas.
My doctoral project, "There is No Stain in Thee: Marian Images, Purity, and Conversion in Spain and Mexico in the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries", proposed how four different images of the Virgin Mary invited – in diverse ways and to different ends – converts and agents of conversion to reflect on ideas about sin, purity, and grace. I posit that these Marian images served as sites for conceptualising the ideal of Christian purity, its relationship to the grace of God, and the representation and perception of Christian identity and belonging in an age of disputed conversion. I am currently developing my thesis into a book manuscript.
